Blue Shield of California Offers Online Benefits Administration to Employers; Contract with BeneTrac Provides Enhanced Capabilities at No Additional Charge

March 23, 2004

San Diego, CA - March 23, 2004 - As a means of making benefits administration management easier and more affordable, Blue Shield of California is offering employer groups an opportunity to use BeneTrac's Web-based enrollment services at no additional charge. The program is offered to all qualified employers who purchase or renew Blue Shield of California medical plans through Jan. 31, 2005.

BeneTrac's electronic enrollment and administration system provides employer groups with a set of online tools designed to help manage multiple benefit plans from a variety of carriers.

"We continue to look for ways to help our clients effectively manage their employee benefits plans," says Peter Duncan, Blue Shield of California vice president of mid and large group sales. "This online program simplifies administrative activities, reduces paperwork, measures efficiency and accuracy of transactions, and makes tracking and transfers faster, all of which can help to reduce cost."

According to Jerry Hawthorne, president and CEO of BeneTrac, "The BeneTrac program allows a company to simplify the resource-intensive work of collecting, organizing and submitting employee benefit information. It accommodates the multiple plan designs an employer might offer from a variety of insurance carriers. This cross-carrier capability saves time and resources, improves accuracy of benefit information for employees and assists Human Resources departments to make positive contributions to the bottom-line profitability of their company.*"

Additionally, BeneTrac has the capability to provide employers with information about bill reconciliation, usage trends, and many other types of information that is available in real time and is measurable by employee, plan or location. Employees can make changes to their accounts, update their data and access important carrier information while the software safeguards against errors, missed entries and conflicting information.

Hawthorne continues, "Web-based employee benefits administration is recognized as a best practice in the insurance industry, yet few carriers have offered this technology to their clients except through proprietary systems that serve only their own customers. Blue Shield is one of the first companies to offer its customers an advanced benefits administration technology that can service not only Blue Shield's customers, but also the benefits that a company might offer its employees, which are provided by other carriers. Few, if any, carriers have made such an offer to their employer clients, making this a truly notable advance within the industry."

To qualify for the ongoing Blue Shield promotion, groups must have between 51 and 1,000 employees. They must purchase or renew a Blue Shield medical plan between now and Jan. 31, 2005, and they must have at least 50 percent of employees enrolled in a Blue Shield medical plan with a minimum of 25 employees enrolled through the electronic enrollment system.
