Blue Shield of California Expands Support for Employee Health Plans; Feature will be operated through BeneTrac

August 2004

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Blue Shield of California Life & Health Insurance Company (Blue Shield Life), Blue Shield of California has developed products and services that enable midsize employers to procure more affordable and higher quality health plans. The enhancements include newly created managed care solutions such as Shield Spectrum PPO Plan 3000, a low cost, high deductible PPO product, and Access+ HMO 25, a no-deductible HMO with unlimited preventive care visits. Also, Blue Shield of California has upgraded its PlanSelect program so it can provide expanded coverage options to various tiers of employee groups (11 small group plans for companies with five to 50 workers, 31 groups plans for companies with 51 or more workers).

Blue Shield Life is also extending Internet-based enrollment and administration services to all employers with 51 or more workers. The feature will be operated through BeneTrac and Bisnet systems professionals, and is designed to accommodate all Blue Shield medical and ancillary plans and participating carrier plans. This online support should grant companies direct control over their plan management and dramatically cut costs, with estimated savings of as much as 25 percent.
